HIV viruses. Coloured Transmission Electron Micro- graph (TEM) of a section through the cell membrane of a T-lymphocyte white blood cell (T-cell) showi- ng budding Human Immunodeficiency Viruses (HIV). HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The spherical viruses are produced within the T-cell (in lower frame) before they bud off. HIV causes AIDS by infecting T- cells, that play a vital role in the body's immune system. Like other viruses, HIV reproduces by turning the infected cell into a virus-producing machine. The lack of healthy T-cells means the victim is helpless against infection. Magnification unknown.
