Rubella virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through some rubella viruses, the cause of German measles. Each rounded virus has an orange core of RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material enclosed within an icosahedral (20-sided) protein coat, or capsid. Rubella viruses belong to the togavirus (rubivirus) group and are transmitted through airborne droplets. German measles causes a mild rash upon infection. However, the disease is particularly harmful to foetuses in the first 4 months of pregnancy. Rubella vaccinations are now routinely carried out. Magnification unknown.
