Paramyxovirus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of three paramyxoviruses (also known as morbilliviruses) in a capsule. This viral group causes measles, mumps, common colds and pneumonia. The long, thin viruses (pink) consist of a lipoprotein envelope around a protein coat, or capsid, containing their RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material. The viruses are inside a capsule (green) which has surface spikes. One of the viruses is coming out of the capsule at lower centre. Paramyxoviruses include rubeola, the cause of measles, and respiratory syncytial viruses (RSV) which cause common colds and pneumonia. Magnification unknown.
