Caption

AIDS viruses. Computer artwork of a T-lymphocyte white blood cell (white) infected with HIV viruses (purple). HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the cause of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The infected T-cell is seen releasing several viruses into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the viruses can infect more T- lymphocytes. The process of releasing more viruses into the blood kills the T-lymphocyte. This is the main reason for the destruction of the immune system in AIDS. The majority of the victims of AIDS die as a result of their weakened immune system, as everyday infections become life- threatening.
