Cytomegalovirus infection. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a cell infected with human cytomegaloviruses (HCMV). There are three clusters of viruses (dark blue dots, lower left & bottom centre) in the cytoplasm (light blue). The viruses contain DNA (deoxyribo- nucleic acid) in a protein coat or capsid. HCMV belong to the betaherpesvirinae subfamily of herpesviruses. They cause an illness resembling glandular fever in patients with weakened immune systems. Foetuses can become brain-damaged from cytomegalic inclusion disease if their mothers carry HCMV. Magnification: x1100 at 35mm size.
