Epstein-Barr virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of an Epstein Barr virus (EBV), the cause of glandular fever. This herpesvirus was isolated from cell cultures taken from tissue from Burkitt lymphoma, a malignant tumour affecting children in parts of Africa. Glandular fever, or infectious mononucleosis, results from infection of the lymph nodes. Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, sore throat and a loss of appetite.
