AIDS virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) by infecting T-lymphocyte white blood cells of the immune system. It instructs them to produce more viruses which bud away from the cell, ultimately killing it. With fewer T-cells, the patient becomes vulnerable to formerly harmless infections. This condition is known as AIDS. Magnification unknown.
