Rotavirus. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a rotavirus. This pathogen is named for the wheel-like appearance of its protein coat (capsid, grey/white). Viruses in the rotavirus group cause gastroenteritis and diarrhoea in humans, commonly infecting the intestines of young children. They are transmitted in faeces. Magnification unknown.
