HIV particles. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) particles (orange) in a host cell. HIV causes the disease AIDS. The virus attacks CD4+ T- lymphocytes (blue), white blood cells that are a crucial part of the body's immune system. It enters the cell and hijacks the cell's machinery to copy itself. The cell dies when the virus clones burst from it, which weakens the immune system, making the AIDS patient susceptible to otherwise harmless secondary infections. Magnification: 48,000x when printed 10 centimetres across; inset, bottom right: 161,000x when printed 10 centimetres across.
