Caption

Virus particle, computer artwork. Also known as a virion, a virus particle consists of a core of genetic material (not seen) encased in a nucleocapsid shell. Surface proteins (protrusions) are used to enable the virus particle to attach to the surface of a cell, and insert its genetic material into the cell. The genetic material then hijacks the cell's biochemical processes and uses the cell to make more virus particles.
