Caption

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a no. Individual virions have icosahedral capsid symmetry (80nm in size); genetic information contained within protein capsid is in form of double-stranded DNA. The virions are not enveloped by a lipoprotein membrane. First isolated from human adenoid glands, the virus is associated with respiratory diseases, often producing latent infections. The symptoms produced resemble those of the common cold. Some serotypes of the adenovirus have been found to induce cancerous tumours when innoculated into newborn hamsters. Magnification: X 21,000 at 35mm size.
