Influenza virus. Computer artwork depicting the structure of an influenza (flu) virus. Influenza viruses form the orthomyxovirus group of viruses. The virus contains a core of RNA (ribonucleic acid) genetic material inside a layered protein coat or capsid (yellow). Surrounding these is a lipid envelope (green). Influenza viruses have a fringe of surface spikes: haemagglutinin (blue), which adheres to the host cell, and neuraminidase (orange). It is these antigen spikes that mutate and change form, making the immune system ineffective and resulting in influenza epidemics. To protect those at risk new influenza vaccines must be prepared and given every year.
