Rhinoviruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a rhinovirus type 1A, the cause of the common cold and other respiratory diseases. The virus consists of a core of ribonucleic acid (RNA) material surrounded by a protein envelope. Rhinoviruses belong to the Picornaviridae family. They are very small and sub-grouped according to their acid sensitivity. Rhinoviruses are spread readily in the air by droplets produced by coughing and sneezing. The virus may infect mucous membranes of the nose and also the lungs causing bronchitis. Negatively stained. Magnification: x100,000 at 35mm size.
