Influenza virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a type A influenza ('flu) virus. This virus has a fringe of surface protein (orange). The viral capsule (green) contains the genetic material ribonucleic acid (RNA) combined with protein. This is a highly contagious orthomyxovirus that affects the respiratory system. It is transmitted by coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include headache, fever and general weakness; secondary lung infections may be a complication. Magnification: x30,000 at 6x7cm size.
