Influenza virus particles. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of influenza A virus particles, a cause of human influenza (flu). This virus belongs to the orthomyxovirus group of RNA (ribonucleic acid) viruses, all of which possess an affinity for mucus. The virus is surrounded by a protein coat, or capsid (dark green), which is covered in molecules called glycoproteins (not seen). The glycoproteins allow the virus to attach to and infect the cells that line the respiratory tract. Symptoms include a fever, a cough, a sore throat and a runny nose.
