Hepatitis B virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Hepatitis B viruses. Here, larger spheres in the blue area are the complete virus (known as Dane particles) with coat and core of the virus visible. Smaller spheres and rod- shaped forms (red area) are made from the protein coat of the virus, and they may be used as raw material for hepatitis B vaccines. The virus causes hepatitis B (serum hepatitis), a sexually transmitted disease or spread through contaminated blood. The patient suffers an inflamed liver, jaundice, and a flu-like illness. Vaccines prevent infection. Magnification: unknown.
