Hepatitis B virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Hepatitis B virus particles. The protein coat and core of each virus are seen cut through in cross-section. Hepatitis B virus is the cause of "serum hepatitis" or hepatitis B. The virus attacks the liver, producing liver inflammation, flu-like symptoms, followed by jaundice. Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease. It is also spread by infected blood through blood transfusions, tattooing, acu- puncture, and needle sharing by intravenous drug abusers. Magnification: 200,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
