Hepatitis A virus. Transmission Electron Micro- graph (TEM) of Hepatitis A virus particles, cause of viral hepatitis in humans. The viruses appear circular in shape. These small RNA viruses belong to the Picornavirus group (which includes the enteroviruses). Hepatitis A virus is the agent which causes infectious hepatitis. The virus attacks the liver producing liver inflammation, fever, followed by jaundice. The virus is excreted in the faeces. Hepatitis A is transmitted by water or food contaminated with infected faeces. The disease is more prevalent in warm countries with poor standards of hygiene. Magnification: x300,000 at 8x10 inch size.
