Hepatitis C. Cutaway computer artwork of the hepatitis C virus, the cause of hepatitis C liver disease. At centre is the RNA (ribonucleic acid, green) genetic material contained within a symmetrical protein coat or capsid (blue). The capsid is enclosed in a phospholipid envelope (red). Hepatitis C is spread largely by blood transfusions and is also common amongst drug addicts who share needles. It causes inflammation of the liver with jaundice and influenza (flu). There are screening tests for this virus but there is no vaccine.
