Maize chlorotic dwarf virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virus particles (virions) of the maize chlorotic dwarf virus (MCDV). This plant virus is a waikavirus, and has an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome. It was first identified in 1972 in the maize plant (Zea mays), one of the world's major food crops. This virus also infects Sorghum grasses, which are a common fodder crop used to feed livestock. Symptoms are reddening and yellowing discolorations. The virus is transmitted by the leafhopper insect Graminella nigrifrons. It is found in the southern USA. Magnification: x92,000 when printed 10cm high.
