Caption

T4 bacteriophages. Artwork of T4 bacteriophages on the surface of a bacterium. Bacteriophages are viruses that attack bacteria. The one at left has attached to the surface of the bacterial cell. The polygonal head contains the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) genetic material. The bacteriophage at right is using its 'tail' to inject its DNA (red strand, lower right) into the bacterium. The DNA will use the bacterium to produce more bacteriophages.
