Intestinal infections. Artwork of a bacterial (top centre), viral (upper left) & protozoan (far left) infection. The finger-like projections (lower right) are villi on the inner surface of the intestines, which aid in the absorption of food. The bacterium is Salmonella, which may cause food poisoning. Common sources of infection are dairy & poultry products. Treatment consists of antibiotic drugs and rehydration. The viruses are Rotavirus particles, which may cause gastroenteritis. They are transmitted in infected faeces. The single celled protozoa are Giardia lamblia, which cause giardiasis leading to abdominal cramp & diarrhoea.
