Caption

Human pathogens. Artwork of a human figure surrounded by disease-causing microscopic pathogens. Pathogens can take the form of a bacterium, virus, protozoan or fungus. Vibrio cholerae, which causes cholera, is a unicellular bacterium. Viruses are infectious agents that replicate within the host's cells, one example is influenza (flu). Protozoa are single celled organisms, such as that which causes malaria. Microscopic fungi can infect the mucus membranes, one example is candidiasis (thrush).
