Caption

Light micrograph (yellow cast) of a section of the brain of a person affected by Alzheimer's disease, showing the presence of neurofibrillary tangles, which together with senile plaques are characteristic features of the disease. In this section stained with Gomori's methenamine silver, tangles are visible as the elongated dark objects at centre-left and centre-right. Neurofibrillary tangles are masses of dark filaments present in cytoplasm of neurones; they are composed of twisted pairs of filaments probably derived from the nerve cell's microtubular system. Magnification: X 210 at 35mm size. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of.
