Acne: artwork showing the formation of a blackhead, the blockage of a pilosebaceous gland of the skin. Acne is a general name given to a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands become inflamed & obstructed. The most common form, Acne vulgaris, begins in adolescence and is due to overactivity of the sebaceous glands. Sebum produced by the glands is trapped by a keratin plug, causing the formation of a pustule. The so- called blackhead is due to melanin (skin pigment) in the keratin plug. Acne vulgaris occurs on the face, chest and back. Its mild form disappears in adulthood; more severe, chronic acne results in infected cysts and scarring of the skin.
