Alzheimer's disease: elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's disease, a form of dementia, photographed with his wife. Alzheimer's- type dementia is the most common cause of progressive presenile dementia & of severe dementia in old age. The disease produces a diffuse degeneration of brain tissue; in advanced cases the brain is severely atrophied. Symptoms include memory disorders, changes in personality, confusion and disorientation. The cause is unknown and no curative treatment is yet available. The rise in the elderly population in affluent countries has ensured that much research is being dedicated to finding a cure.
