Alzheimer's disease: doctor discussing an experimental memory improvement drug (Cognex, a type of cognitive enhancer) with a male Alzheimer's patient & his wife. Alzheimer's-type dementia is the most common cause of progressive presenile dementia & of severe dementia in old age. The disease produces a diffuse degeneration of brain tissue with progressive atrophy. Symptoms include memory disorders, changes in personality, confusion and disorientation. The cause is unknown and no curative treatment is yet (1991) available. The rise in the elderly population has ensured that much research is being directed to finding a cure.
