Alzheimer patient. An elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's disease, is cared for by having his hair combed. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of senile dementia in old age, rare before the age of 60. This progressive form of dementia produces a change in personality over time, including memory disorders, confusion and disorientation. Loss of sensory and motor functions tend to be spared until the late stages, when the patient may require full-time attention. The disease produces a degeneration of brain tissue; in advanced cases the brain is severely atrophied. There is yet no known cure.
