Chin abscess. View of an abscess on the chin of a 31 year-old man. The abscess is a yellow pus filled sore surrounded by red and inflamed skin. Abscesses are the result of wound infection, usually by the bacteria staphylococcus. The pus is made up of destroyed tissue cells, leucocytes (white blood cells) and dead microorganisms. Abscesses can develop in any organ or in the soft tissue beneath the skin. Treatment usually involves taking antibiotics against the bacterial infection. Large abscesses may need draining to remove the pus.
