Alzheimer's disease. Computer enhanced image of a man with Alzheimer's disease. He is represented as having part of his head missing, in the form of a jigsaw piece. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive condition which attacks the brain, leading to memory loss, mood swings, confusion, and ultimately death. There is no cure, or any way of preventing the decline of normal mental functions. The disease usually affects those over 60, but it can affect younger people. Neurotransmitter levels in the brain show marked reduction during the course of the disease, and much research is targetted at a way of restoring normal concentrations.
