Acne. Artwork showing a section through human skin with acne. This is a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands and hair follicles become inflamed. A hair (brown, at centre) can be seen within a pit called a follicle. On either side of the hair are globular sebaceous glands which produce oily sebum (yellow). In this case sebum has blocked the follicle and allowed bacteria to multiply causing inflammation and a blackhead (comedone) pustule. The most common form of acne is acne vulgaris which mainly affects adolescents. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs and ultraviolet light.
