Acromegaly. Profile of a 90 year old woman's face showing the symptoms of acromegaly. This is a disorder in which there is uncontrolled growth, leading to changing features and enlargement of the hands and feet. Here, the woman's jaw is jutting out, and her face has lengthened. Acromegaly is caused by excessive production of the growth hormone somatotrophin by a benign tumour of the anterior pituitary gland beneath the brain. The condition can be controlled with drugs, or the tumour can be excised surgically or treated by radiotherapy.
