Water drop impact. High-speed photograph of secondary drop formation following the impact of a water drop on the surface of a body of water. The impact caused the surface of the water to collapse, creating a rush of water inwards and upwards to form a column. Surface tension effects along the column have caused the column to separate out into the secondary drops seen here. On the surface of the water, shock waves are radiating outwards from the points of impact as concentric circular ripples.
