Baldness. The balding head of a 90-year-old woman seen from behind. This type of hair loss, known as hereditary alopecia, is common among men but also affects young and post-menopausal women. The normal scalp hairs fall out and are replaced by much finer, lighter hairs. The thinning may start at the temples and progress, or it may first affect the crown. The condition is not serious, the only problem being cosmetic.
