Bald patch on a 52 year old man's head caused by alopecia areata. This is a localised loss of hair which is equally common in men and women. The cause of the hair loss is unknown. Often, hair regrows on the bald patch, returning the affected person's appearance to normal. There is no effective treatment for alopecia areata.
