Alzheimer's disease. Coloured axial (horizontal) SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) scan of a brain showing degeneration due to Alzheimer's disease. The red areas show the most active parts of the brain, which have taken up more of the radioactive tracer that was injected into the brain's blood supply. The degenerating area is seen as the break (lower left) in the red ring. The symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include senility and loss of mental faculties. The tracer is seen by its emission of gamma ray photons, and the image constructed by computed tomography methods. For a SPECT scan of a healthy brain, see image P332/362.
