Liver abscess. Gross specimen of a human liver with a pus filled abscess. An abscess is a localized collection of pus surrounded by damaged and inflamed tissue. A liver abscess can be caused by the spread of bacteria from the intestine or the invasion of amoebic parasites. Symptoms of a liver abscess include pain, high fever and mental confusion. It can be treated by aspiration (sucking out of pus) or abdominal surgery.
