Ascites of the liver. Gross clinical specimen of a section through a human liver with ascites. Ascites is the abnormal accumulation of fluid, caused by infectious diseases or as a complication of cirrhosis of the liver. Once the underlying condition has been treated, ascites may be treated with antibiotics.
