Caption

Asbestos fibers breathed into the lungs are engulfed by macrophages and become coated with several iron containing elements to form ferruginous bodies that persist in the lungs for years. These may be instrumental in asbestos fiber cancers. This fiber is almost completely encased in the coating, only a part remains visible. Magnification: 1500x.
