Arachnoiditis. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a lumbar vertebra of a patient with arachnoiditis. Arachnoiditis is the inflammation of the arachnoid membrane (centre, white), one of the membranes that surround and protect the spinal cord. The inflamed membrane presses on the nerves causing great pain and other symptoms that may include numbness and tingling in the legs, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Arachnoiditis is often a complication of spinal surgery, but it may also be caused by infection or injury. Treatment may include pain management and physiotherapy.
