This cross sectional CT image shows the appearance of brain death in an infant. As a result of anoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain) the brain undergoes extreme swelling. This causes the pressure inside of the head to become very high. As the pressure in the head rises the blood flow to the brain decreases. When the pressure rises above the systemic arterial blood pressure all blood flow to the brain ceases and the brain swells and dies. This image shows severe decrease in the density of the brain from severe swelling (oedema) secondary to lack of oxygen to the brain.
