Abscess. Image 1 of 2. Abscess on a 44-year-old man's nose. An abscess is a painful pus-filled swelling caused by a bacterial infection. Here, the abscess is surrounded by cellulitis, a infection of the skin and its underlying tissues that causes the area to become red, hot and tender. Treatment is with a course of antibiotics and, in severe cases, surgical drainage of the pus. See M108/761 for the abscess after treatment.
