False-colour scintigram (gamma camera scan) of the lungs of an asthmatic person, obtained following the inhalation of a radioactive gas, Xenon-133. On a scan of a healthy subject the lungs would be represented by larger areas of red & white, indicating better ventilation. This pattern of reduced ventilation in a lung scan might also be found in a subject who is a heavy cigarette smoker.
