Asthma nebulizer. Nurse with an elderly woman who is using a breathing mask and nebulizer (at lower right) to treat bronchial asthma. The nebulizer pumps a stream of air or oxygen across a chamber containing a drug, dispersing it into a fine mist. Asthma attacks, caused by an allergic response to airborne particles, lead to breathlessness and coughing. Asthma attacks are normally treated with bronchodilator drugs (which widen airways) and/or steroid drugs (which reduce inflammation). Photo- graphed at Tameside Hospital in Britain.
