Caption

Thermogram comparing a normal and arthritic knee; the inflamed arthritic joint is on left. Thermography maps the heat distribution over the body surface. In this case, it gives a colour- coded image of temperature variation in 1-degree steps (see scale at top), where blue = cold and white = hot. The reference disc between the knees is calibrated at 30 degrees C. A variation in temperature of 5 degrees C. exists between the left and right knees.
