Caption

False-colour osteoarthritis: X-ray of the human lumbar spine showing scoliosis (lateral curvature) and degenerative changes in the vertebrae (backbones) due to osteoarthritis. In addition to a reduction in the spaces between adjacent vertebrae, osteoarthritis is characterized by the formation of osteophytes bony, thorn-like projections that appear to almost form a bridge between adjacent vertebrae. Osteoarthritis is associated with mechanical wear and most commonly affects the elderly.
