Heberden's nodes in rheumathoid arthritis. Coloured X-ray of a hand affected by rheumatoid arthritis and Heberden's nodes. They arise in the interphalangeal joints and result in hard swellings (coloured red) on the upper surface of the joint. One is particularly evident in the middle finger at upper centre. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most severe type of inflammatory joint disease in which the body's immune system acts against itself and damages joints and surrounding soft tissues. The joints affected become extremely painful and deformed.
