Osteoarthritis. Woman holds her painful foot, the swollen ankle affected by osteoarthritis. Osteo- arthritis is a joint disease which usually affects hips, knees and spine. Most commonly the result of wear and tear on the joints, it is characterised by the degeneration of the cartilage which lines the joints. Typical symptoms include joint pain, swelling, and creaking and stiffness of the areas affected. There is no specific treatment for osteoarthritis; symptoms may be relieved by analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs.
