Arthritic hands. The severely deformed hand of a patient with rheumatoid arthritis holding a specially-designed knife. The patient's fingers are abnormally bent because of damage to the knuckle joints, which are severely swollen. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body's immune system attacks joint tissue, most often in the hands and feet. Affected joints become painful and inflamed, limiting movement. The patient may require specially-adapted tools to compensate for this lack of movement so that they can live a normal life.
