Arthritis. Artwork based on an X-ray of pain in the hips and lower back caused by arthritis. The orange and yellow areas show the areas of pain. Bones are coloured blue and yellow. The pain is centred on the hips (centre left and right) and the lower back (upper centre). Arthritis of the hips is usually osteoarthritis, a disease of the joint cartilage that is associated with changes in the underlying bone. It is associated with mechanical wear and most commonly affects the elderly. The condition can be extremely disabling. Treatment includes taking painkilling drugs, but a hip replacement can also be performed, which replaces the damaged bone with durable implants.
